Dear Students,
I regret to inform you that I will not be offering the
General Assembly Scholarship for the coming 2012 school year. This was a tough decision to make, but I
feel as though it is better for the public universities and taxpayers in
Illinois. As you may know, the
universities are the ones who bear the costs of covering the scholarships I
give out. With the budget deficits in
Illinois, I believe this is an inappropriate burden to place on the
universities at this time.
The General Assembly Scholarship program has also been the
subject of numerous media reports alleging abuses by legislators. While I am confident that the citizens
committee who awards the scholarships for me has done so solely on the basis
of merit and financial need, I have decided that I can no longer participate
in a program that has been handled so poorly.
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission is a good
resource for scholarship searches and FAFSA questions. You can access their website at: www.collegeillinois.org. If you have any questions please feel free
to contact me at 847-257-0450.
Sincerely,
Elaine Nekritz
